I was psyched to hear that we were hosting the regional Science Olympiad. I had such a great experience with it when I was in elementary school that I couldn't wait to help create the same experience for the students competing this year.
I volunteered to help write, proctor, and grade the Disease Detectives event. Watching students from 6th-12th grade, who gave up a whole Saturday after studding for months to compete in this, successfully work through the challenging epidemiology and pathology questions was extremely gratifying (even if I did get a little carried away on the Vibiro case study). Seeing their dedication to learning is one of my favorite parts about volunteering in events that celebrate knowledge and challenge the mind.
